I am a figurative artist, based in Ipswich, Suffolk, where I make expressive paintings and portraits full of nuances of light, colour and atmosphere mainly in oil on canvas.
I am probably best known for my paintings of the figure in an interior.
I like the drama of the quiet moment, the simple everyday things that we all experience… In between the big events of life – people are living normal lives; my work is a celebration of that.
I often work from the model as part of my practice. I use the tiny observations to build the drawing or painting; I look at the subtle changes of light bouncing off the skin, the delicacy of tone. I enjoy the rapid marks that capture the immediacy and dynamic form of gestural poses.
I have exhibited widely and I have won awards for my portraits, including a prize at the BP Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery, I regularly exhibit in venues in London, East Anglia and abroad, and I have my work in numerous private collections.
My varied career has involved work in theatre, film and television as well as solo and collaborative work in performance, video and film projects. I also have significant experience as an art instructor, working in schools and colleges as well as non-educational settings.
The weekly classes held in my studio are not about creating masterpieces, but about exploration.
My students use the time with me to leave the stress and tension of life outside the studio and immerse themselves in the moment, to contemplate the stillness of a stone, a pot, compare their qualities, size, and shape, to fall in love with the gentle form of a petal; recreate the stunning vistas of another landscape.
Workshops and Demonstrations can be held at your venue or you could bring a group to the studio.
